Cities across Iran engulfed in thick layers of dust, pollutants

The air quality was hazardous and visibility was very low throughout Friday and also on Saturday in Tehran as a white and grey fog enveloped the entire city. Tehran was the most polluted city in the world on Friday, with a “very unhealthy” average real-time air quality index of 236, according to global air quality monitoring company IQAir.

Shanghai to start easing lockdown after another mass testing

China’s largest city of Shanghai will soon begin lifting lockdown in communities that report no positive cases within 14 days after another round of COVID-19 testing, authorities said Saturday. The fresh round of testing comes as the city reported about 23,000 cases on Saturday, most of them asymptomatic. Large swathes of Shanghai, with a population of 26 million, have been under lockdown since March 28, leading to complaints from residents about shortages of food and basic necessities.

Woman smashes egg on Australian politician's head

Filmed by the Whistleblowers, Activists and Communities Alliance, a woman smashed an egg on the head of Australian politician Craig Kelly in a Melbourne park during a rally on Friday, April 8, while accusing him of being a “Nazi lover.” Kelly, the United Australia Party leader (centre-right), responded by saying, “You’re a disgrace.” Victoria Police via local media said they were investigating. The United Australia Party leader said on local radio that he intended to press charges.

Child care is expensive everywhere. But this country tops the list

South Korea tops the list of most expensive places to raise a child from birth to age 18, measured as a percentage of per capita gross domestic product, according to research from Jefferies (JEF) which used data from Yuwa Population Research. China comes in second, followed by Italy. The United States is wedged in the middle of the top 14 most expensive places, between Germany and Japan.

One dead in Israel army raid on Palestinian refugee camp: officials

Israeli security forces shot dead a Palestinian on Saturday in the West Bank refugee camp of Jenin, home of the gunman behind a recent deadly Tel Aviv attack, the Palestinian health ministry said. The Israeli army told AFP a military operation was ongoing in the Jenin camp, a stronghold of Palestinian armed factions in the north of the occupied West Bank. The Palestinian health ministry said five others were wounded in Jenin by Israeli gunfire.

At least 16 killed in attack on army base in Burkina Faso

At least a dozen soldiers and four paramilitary fighters were killed during an attack on an army base in Burkina Faso’s Sanmatenga province. The assault on Friday in the northern region also left more than 20 soldiers wounded, the army said in a statement.

Will Smith gets 10-year Oscars ban for slapping Chris Rock

Will Smith has been banned from attending the Oscars for 10 years, the academy that hands out the awards announced, less than two weeks after the American actor slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage. After a meeting of its board of governors, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said on Friday that Smith also would not be allowed to attend any other events hosted by the academy during that period.

Record 1st-quarter deforestation in Brazilian Amazon

Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon set a new quarterly record in the first three months of 2022 compared to a year earlier, official data showed Friday. Satellite images revealed the destruction of 941 square kilometers of rain forest -- the highest quarterly rate since the start of Brazil's Deter monitoring program in 2015.

Kinder chocolate factory told to shut over salmonella cases

A Kinder chocolate factory in Belgium has been ordered to close after it was linked to dozens of salmonella cases. Belgium's food safety authority has also ordered the recall of all Kinder products made at the factory in Arlon, which is owned by Ferrero. Suspected salmonella cases linked to Kinder chocolate have been reported in countries including the UK, Germany, France and Belgium. Ferrero has apologised and acknowledged "internal failures".

The Weeknd, Doja Cat lead artists at Billboard Music Awards

The Weeknd is the top finalist at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards for a second year in a row, up for 17 awards, followed by Doja Cat, who is up for 14 awards. Finalists were announced Friday across 62 categories for the awards that measure chart success, streaming, airplay and social engagement. The show will air on NBC and Peacock on May 15 from Las Vegas.

UK's Queen Elizabeth to miss annual Maundy Service

Britain's Queen Elizabeth, who has been suffering some problems with her mobility, will not attend next week's annual Maundy Service, where the monarch usually distributes coins to pensioners in an ancient tradition ahead of Easter. Elizabeth, who turns 96 later this month, will be represented by her son and heir Prince Charles and his wife Camilla at the service on Thursday at Windsor Castle's St George's Chapel.

Snoop Dogg: Sexual assault claim against US rapper dropped

A sexual assault claim which had been filed by an unnamed woman against US rapper Snoop Dogg has been withdrawn. The woman, identified in the lawsuit as Jane Doe, had accused the US rapper of sexually assaulting her after attending one of his concerts in 2013. Snoop Dogg's representatives said the allegations were false and welcomed the voluntary dismissal. The claim was pulled earlier this week, nearly two months after it was filed in the Central District of California.

Rejuvenation of woman's skin could tackle diseases of ageing

Researchers have rejuvenated a 53-year-old woman's skin cells so they are the equivalent of a 23-year-old's. The scientists in Cambridge believe that they can do the same thing with other tissues in the body. The eventual aim is to develop treatments for age-related diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and neurological disorders. The technology is built on the techniques used to create Dolly the cloned sheep more than 25 years ago.

Colombian flooding kills 10, several missing

The flooding at Abriaqui in the Antioquia department surprised a group of miners as they were eating dinner on Wednesday evening, mayor Hector Orrego told local television. It destroyed one level of the mining camp as well as part of a plant, the Antioquia government said. The National Disaster Risk Management Unit said the preliminary toll was 10 dead, seven missing and 10 injured.

After night-long manhunt, Tel Aviv terrorist found, killed by security forces

Israel was on high alert after a Palestinian terrorist killed two people and injured several other on a busy street in central Tel Aviv on Thursday night. The terrorist, identified as 28-year-old Ra’ad Fathi Hazem from the Jenin refugee camp, was killed in an exchange of fire with Israeli forces several kilometers away in Jaffa on early on Friday morning.
